I am Babur Yakar, the owner of Food Forest.

We supply and deliver fresh natural vegetables and home made natural products to our customers.

Our ultimate goal is to build the first edible urban forest in South Africa.

Let me explain what I mean by an edible forest;

Picture yourself in a forest where almost everything is around you is food. It’s a forest, a living entity. It is a self-renewing, self-fertilizing, self-maintaining being.

You walk around the trees, and you can pick apples, oranges, peaches, lemons, apricots, almonds, hazelnuts from the branches, depending on the season. Shrubs are located here and there, filling up the canopy in between the trees. The shrubs are bearing raspberries, blueberries, currants, and other lesser known fruits, flowers, and nuts at different times of the year. Assorted native flowers, wild edibles, herbs, and perennial vegetables thickly covering the ground. You can use many of these plants for food, or medicine. Some attract beneficial insects, birds, and butterflies. Some act as soil builders. The others help to keep out weeds. Here and there, vines climb on trees and shrubs with fruit hanging through the foliage- grapes, dragon fruits, nasturtiums and morning glories.

Basically, edible forest is a perennial polyculture of multipurpose plants. Most plants regrow every year without replanting. Polyculture means that many plants grow together, each plant contributes to the success of the whole. Multipurpose is meaning that each plant contributes to the whole, by fulfilling more than one function.

In other words, a food forest is an edible ecosystem. It is a self-sustaining ecosystem, a consciously designed community of mutually beneficial plants and animals intended for human food production.

Too good to be true, isn’t it? It is a new way of thinking for many of us.

It is different compared to a typical commercial harvesting; rows and rows of same type of trees on bare-naked soil. Soil has lost its natural nutrients and life within, since it is loaded with pesticides and hormones. The soil has no life bearing qualities; you can easily say that it is as good as dirt. Unfortunately, this is what we have accepted as “farming” in our modern “civilized” culture.

We cannot solve the significant problems we face at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them.
Albert Einstein

Don’t you think it is now to think differently?

We humans do our best to hold back our succession by mowing, weeding, plowing, and spraying.

Instead of trying to sail against the wind, why don’t we adjust our sail to the wind and glide along?

Edible forest gardening is about expanding the horizons of our food gardening across the full range of successional sequence, from field to forest, and everything in between. It is an art and science of putting plants together in woodland like patterns that forge mutually beneficial relationships, creating an ecosystem that is much more than the sum of its parts.

This is what we would like to achieve.

Today’s culture we live in, for all its benefits, has created immense problems for the forests all over the world, as well as for anyone who wants to eat healthy food in the 21st century.

We can solve these problems only with the significantly different ways of thinking.

Our ultimate goal is not only growing crops, but also the cultivation and perfection of new ways of seeingthinking, and acting in the world.

We believe that we can grow fruits, nuts, vegetables, herbs, mushrooms, other useful plants, and animals in a way that mimics the natural ecosystems.

We can create a beautiful, diverse, high-yield garden.

If designed with care and deep understanding of ecosystem function, we can also design a natural garden that is largely self-maintaining.

When you purchase fresh vegetables, or home made products from our online shop, a portion of your money goes to the building a forest.
