Held every Saturday at the historic Granger Bay site of the V&A Waterfront, the OZCF Market Day is a community farmers-style market for independent local farmers and artisanal food producers. At the OZCF Market customers can do weekly food shopping (veg, fruit, bread, organic dairy, free-range eggs, honey, muesli etc), try out some delicious cooked and raw foods and be inspired about helping to build an alternative food system. Additionally, customers can buy edible plants and seedlings, compost and gardening supplies and equipment.
Entrance: There is no fee to enter the market. Pedestrian entrances are open directly from Beach Road, and cyclists, joggers, dog walkers and others are most welcome.
Public transport: The MyCiTi 104 route stops opposite the market on Beach Road and at the main V&A Waterfront stop. The T01 also stops there, as well as on Granger Bay Blvd a block from the market.
Parking: 250 surface parking bays are available adjacent to the market. Parking is charged by the V&A Waterfront at R10 for the full day.
Dogs: Dogs are welcome to join you at our market; however we ask that you please abide by these six rules to make your pet’s visit to the market a good experience for everyone:
- Dogs must be kept on a short leash.
- Dogs must be under control and by the owner’s side at all times.
- Keep dogs away from produce, plants, and other food products.
- Dogs must be friendly with other dogs and children to earn the right to be at the market.
- Be considerate – not everyone loves dogs and some customers are allergic to animals.
- Don’t forget to clean up after your dog.
OZCF management reserves the right to request that owners remove a dog from the market if the above requests are not being adhered to.
Traders make every effort to create links between urban farming, Cape Town’s history and heritage, and a sense of place, through labelling, using seasonal produce, etc. Educational talks and events are linked to the market and there are plenty of activities for kids such as story telling, planting, craft, yoga and more.
Communal tables are provided for visitors to eat at, or just enjoy the Saturday papers. We also provide free wi-fi, courtesy of Vanilla Internet Services.
Stallholder costs are kept as low as possible to encourage start up businesses, the vibe is friendly and supportive.
Catering for vegans and vegetarians, raw foodies, and customers who want wheat, gluten, sugar and dairy-free alternatives is important to us. We also sell indigenous and other plants, heirloom and organic seed and gardening products.
The farm is financed primarily through the funds made at the Market Day.
OZCF Market Day received the South African Heritage Award in the 2014 Eat Out Zonnebloem Produce Awards.
About our veg and fruit
We realise how important it is to build consumer trust in organic produce and a whole lot of work needs to be done in this regard. OZCF Market Day sources produce from small and micro-farmers, most of whom, apart from one commercial farmer, cannot afford organic certification.
Some farmers we purchase from do however, belong to Green Road and as such are part of the organic PGS (Participatory Guarantee System) – which is an organic quality assurance system implemented and controlled by the committed organic farmer-producers through active participation, along with the consumers, in the process based on verifiable trust. It is not a certification system but, rather, one that is based on personal integrity and peer pressure. We also purchase produce from Green Road themselves and as such we support all the farmers who belong to their PGS.
We also purchase veg from small, local farmers in Philippi, Elgin, Nyanga and Khayelitsha, all of whom use no chemicals, but are currently unable to verify this independently.
The apples and pears that we sell are not organic, but we know that the fruit itself is not sprayed. There are no organic apples to be had in South Africa, sadly.
It is critical that we are transparent and open, and that is why we cannot make the claim that our veg is organic if it is not certified and marked as such. We rather say “locally grown by small farmers”.
Any questions about a specific item on a particular market day can be raised in our veg tent and we will be able to tell you which farm it came from and what its status is. We continue to work to improve our labelling, signage and informational displays at the market to support transparency and educated consumers.
Becoming a Trader
New traders are always welcome to enquire about available space. Please note that the market focus is on local, fresh, seasonal, healthy vegetables, fruit, herbs and other primary food items (honey, olive oil, eggs, bread, meats, etc.), as well as seeds, seedlings, plants, fertilisers, and other nursery-related items, with a small amount of hand-made food and drink on offer. The market does not trade in lifestyle, fashion, health, beauty, craft or other items.
